Lone Mountain Gymnastics and Swim School is an official member club of USA Gymnastics and the United States Swim School Association. I am a flat lander and this was a hike that tested us. The ridge between the first and the second plateaus was very skinny. I took 2 liters of water and it was adequate. South from Butte and turn west toward Big Sky. We did run into construction and improvised by using some of the service roads near the tree line. Round trip took about 4hr 20min (~2:20 up / ~2 down)—and we are flatlander/city folk in pretty good shape with decent mountain experience in Colorado including 14ers like North Maroon and La Plata. Campsites are available, but further away. They may have been trying to say you can’t take the chairlift up to the start of the Bone Crusher trail on weekdays (you can on weekends), but we wouldn’t have done that anyway, as it would be cheating :) Maybe she sees too many unprepared hikers get in trouble on this hike, and I can understand that, but wish she would have been clearer because we almost missed out. Aside from lightning and high wind risk, coming down from the top in rain or cloud cover would have been very scary. From the sign to the summit, it took me 1:10 and I took frequent breaks as it becomes steeper and rockier and more of a scramble as you ascend. Just go slow, watch your footing, and maybe wear shoes that cover your Achilles because those rocks slide and they SLAY when kicked up. Plus I enjoyed the challenge and the sweat as I climbed. We then headed up bone crusher. Sunny, not a cloud in the sky, and 0% precip forecast, so we decided to go for it starting at 2:30pm. Once you got past that the rest of the way was good. Once past the spine, steep steep steep scree scramble to the top. We didn’t find the trail closed. It took 1.5 hours from the start of Bone Crusher to the summit. Cross Harbor is also behind the very exclusive Yellowstone Club. Very easy but good beginners hike. There are multiple sections requiring both hands and feet, where it's exposed, technical, very steep, or all three. Inside my hut it might be dim, but in my mind I hear no noise. I attempted a solo hike when there was snow cover and opted to abort at 2.5 miles once approaching the spine - it's downright scary and I just didn't feel comfortable navigating alone. The views were stunning at the top and the hike in and of itself is an accomplishment, but just be prepared for what you're getting into. We saw 5 mountain goats, watched the sunset and ran down to avoid scrambling in the dark. Climb the ridge with slopes to 40 degrees near the summit.2.) Took us 3 hrs from top of Swift Current to top of Lone Peak. The hike down was as pleasant as any 3,600 ft descent can be, and we rewarded ourselves with a few well deserved beers at the bottom! That said, I would agree with an earlier contributor who said this hike is not for anyone even remotely afraid of heights. If you’re afraid of heights this section might scare you. Good luck! Once you offload the Tram, you will be standing at the summit of Lone Peak, at 11,166 feet, and experience views from Montana's highest scenic overlook. Going down the ski slope area is very easy and while some of the dirt is loose, it’s a great way to end the trail. So we hiked off the back down one of ski runs. Once you get above the trees, the wind really picks up and I was glad I had my jacket at that point (I initially thought I brought too much as I took of off very quick into the first quarter of the hike). This is a very grueling but rewarding trail. I'd like to do it but I'm here alone and understand that it's not advisable to hike alone given local bear population. If you’ve never done something like this, it might be recommended to go with someone a little more comfortable in the mountains to help you find a nice route and keep you calm.
